When betting on the outright winner at a major bookie you can back the next champion, the two teams to play the final, stage of elimination and other eye-catching markets.
FA Cup history
The FA Cup is rich in history with the tournament first played back in 1871 meaning it’s fast approaching 150 years old. The fact that is not only continues to be in existence but actually grows in popularity and stature every year is quite remarkable. The Premier League is big business in UK sport, but many consider the FA Cup to be the jewel in the crown of English football.
Each FA Cup renewal begins with over 730 teams from many different levels of English football. The great thing about this competition is a tiny, part-time football club operating on a shoestring budget has the same opportunity as the biggest names in the business. The history of the FA Cup is littered with famous cup upset wins.
Arsenal won the FA Cup in 2020 when beating fellow Londoners Chelsea in the final at Wembley. That was the Gunners 14th FA Cup title and that made them the tournament’s most successful side. They first kissed the silverware in 1930 and as well as their 14 title wins the club have also finished as runners up on seven occasions. Their nearest rivals in the outright winner list is Manchester United who have their name on the trophy a dozen times between 1909 and 2016.
FA Cup Format
The FA Cup begins with the qualifying rounds when many of English football’s smaller teams battle it out to reach the first round which is known as the FA Cup proper. Teams in the early rounds aren’t necessarily involved to win the trophy, their main aim is to remain competitive for as long as possible in the hope of drawing a home match against a team from the Premier League or Championship. This provides a big cash boost to the minnows.
Each round of the FA Cup is a knockout format with the draw taking place to pair teams against each other and decide which will enjoy home advantage. If a game ends level after 90 minutes it will go to a replay which will be played at the home of the away team, improving their chances of going through to the next round. If the replay is a draw at full-time the game goes to extra-time and then penalties if required. There is no longer a replay option for the FA Cup final.
